It is not known exactly when this temple was built but according to historical records it is stated that the Gunung Kawi Sebatu Temple was built for the worship of the gods, especially Lord Vishnu on the orders of Rishi Markandeya. Rishi Markandeya is a Maharishi of Hinduism from the island of Java who move to Bali in 8th century. The atmosphere that is still beautiful is also presented by Gunung Kawi Temple.
